World of Warcraft Expansion in the Works! But is That a Good Thing?

With battlegrounds finally in the game, will the add-on be the next big addition?
You knew it would only be a matter of time. At last we know for sure; WoW will receive an add-on pack. Although definitely in the works, this no doubt first of many expansions is still firmly clouded in mystery though.

We can only presume more quests, areas and instances will be present, although new races and classes would also be nice. Personally I'd love to see them go the SWG route of bolting on an entire new genre, as with the space expansion, but then again in WoW's medieval universe options are a little limited for something of that scope.

It's worth mentioning that listeners to weekly radio show Gaming Steve gained some additional info a few weeks back that perhaps most haven't heard yet. Originally the expansion was designed heavily around an under-water theme, with all the new areas taking place sub-sea level. Apparently this concept was later scaled back, if not shit-canned altogether, however I would place bets on a water-themed area still being present in some form, albeit small.

Either way, I'm personally taking a break from WoW at the moment. Even though I love and adore it and fully plan on returning at some point down the line, part of me's a little pissed off at the game. Or rather, the effect it has on people.

Who needs a real girlfriend? WoW is full of chicks. Even if they are dudes
Let me put it this way. I don't see or chat to my mates anywhere near as much as I used to before they got addicted to WoW. Many of the gaming clans I know have lost players and subsequently died off in the wake of WoW. Kids are failing and dropping out of school as a result of viscious WoW-addictions. Most of all, people in general just don't seem anywhere near as revved up about new games these days...yes, 'cos of WoW. All they care about is dinging that next level.

When you create a character in the World of Warcraft, it's scary to realise just what you're letting yourself in for. MMORPGs in general are known for their addictive nature, but this one is a whole other kind of addiction that's quite unlike anything the gaming world has ever seen. WoW isn't a game in fact, it's a god damn lifestyle.

Even though I'm the last person in the world who should be complaining about how much time people spend playing video games, I find that a little sad. Sure, WoW is incredible, but there's still more to life than tanking mobs and nabbing raid loot.

Maybe I'm just saddened that since its release many absolute gems seem to have been forgotten. Titles like Guild Wars, Jade Empire, Conker and especially Battlefield 2 are about as impressive as games have ever been, and yet time after time all I see on my X-Fire buddy list are the masses plugging into WoW for eight hours a day.

We all dig what we dig at the end of the day, and for those so entertained by WoW, I'm pleased for you. God knows if any game deserves such adulation, it's this one. Just don't forget to eat occasionally...
