What is sv_downloadurl?
sv url download is a variable used in some game servers to download files from the internet (HTTP) rather than being sent from the game-server itself. The game-server connection isn't necessarily slow, but the clientrate settings limit the outgoing speed to each player and thus; the map downloads seem to take forever!
Half-life and Half-life 2 servers have the ability to send maps, models, sounds and other files to the player who is connecting. The problem is, these transfers can often be slow, irrespective of the overall connection speed and occasionally affect the whole server as it is trying to push lots of data to lots of players at the one time. However, SV_DownloadURL is a faster way of delivering custom content to your players much faster!
What benefits does HTTP downloading have?
HTTP downloading has some distinct advantages:
1) There is no impact on the game server when downloading custom content, as a completely separate server does the transfer, and our custom-built content servers are designed to be better at sending files!
2) Players will download custom content at their maximum transfer rate, resulting in downloads over 10 times faster than your game server!
3) Players who are downloading custom content do not take up a player slot on the server while they wait!
4) Activating sv_downloadurl on your server is simple, as it only takes a few config changes to your server.cfg. However, if you run into problems we will provide instructions and support to properly configure your game server!
